Also known as Costochondritis, Costosternal syndrome is a benign cause of chest pain. Costochondritis is an inflammatory process of the costochondral or costosternal joints. The costosternal joins are the areas where the ribs are joined to the breastbone (sternum) with cartilage.
- localized pain often sharp but can be dull, aching
- often pain on left side of sternum, but can present on both sides
- pain when taking deep breaths
- pain when coughing
- difficulty breathing
- referred pain (may actually be a nerve problem in the spinal column, but the brain picks it up as chest pain)
